Setting the Table for a Duck Hunting Dinner Party

Writer: Lauren VannLauren Vann

For years, our family has enjoyed chilly mornings before Thanksgiving crouched in the woods along a pond bank, waiting for the ducks to fly in. You never go duck hunting without getting cold and wet, but the thrill of the hunt makes it all worth it.

Cooking with friends is one of our favorite things to do, and I especially love setting a table with gifts we received at our wedding and all the unique serving pieces I've found over the year's in Thomasville's antique shops.

Pictured: I found this brique ware terracotta duck casserole dish at Vintage Treasures II in downtown Thomasville and have loved it ever since. It adds an earthy pop of color.

Creating a pleasing table starts with layering a number of textures, patterns and materials to create a sense of depth. Combining wood, metal, clay, glass and patterned linens creates a beautiful look that feels authentic to our region without being too formal.

This gorgeous vintage duck tureen was found at Toscoga, my favorite antique store downtown. It's a must-see! The tureen is available from several places online, including here.

I love this brique ware duck casserole dish. It reminds me so much of the kinds of serving pieces I used when I lived in Brazil, which was influenced by European style. I found my piece at Vintage Treasures II antique shop in Thomasville, and there are several available online, on platforms like Etsy and eBay.
